Overview
Gout is a type of joint infection. It occurs due to the body's elevated uric acid levels, which then accumulate in joints. A waste product called uric acid can build up in the joints as urate crystals and cause insufferable pain. Along with intense pain, gout symptoms include swelling and redness in the joints. The joint at the base of the big toe is where gout occurs most frequently. Even a light touch to the swollen area becomes intolerable when a person has gout. The other common sites include the knee joint, wrist joint, and ankle joint. Gout frequently results in a scorching sensation and excruciating pain. It frequently necessitates an urgent trip to the hospital. However, gout can be managed painlessly if it is caught early enough and the uric acid levels are kept in check.
